sweet summer
Fall Semester Courses: Merchandising 1135 Microeconomics 2113 English 1100 Psychology 1000 Math 1065 Thank goodness I didn't have to take a math placement test because I scored high enough on the SATs. No Chemistry for me either. Although, the Spanish Placement test was rather wonderful. I am placed into the highest level and upon passing, I also get all of the credits for the previous courses, which takes care of my general electives. Amen to that. Freshamn orientation was a lot of fun...and I mean A LOT. I can't wait until school starts. Coach Catania gave me summer workout clothes and new shoes. It felt like Christmas. I miss my older sister. Quilting time with Heather Fox soon! :) New York this weekend. I shouldn't be doing this, I have so much left to do tonight. Being too busy is such a drag. Love. |

HELLO! It is so good to finally be able to write to you. We came to Nairobi this weekend to celebrate the 4th at the American Embassy, meet current serving volunteers, and, most importantly, to find out where we would be stationed for the next two years. Thus far, we have been trained in Kitui, a city about 3 hours from Nairobi. My family in Kitui is incredible. I am living with a mother, father, three brothers, grandmother, and several extended familiy members. As you well know, familial ties in Africa are very strong, so my cousins, grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc. all live in my vicinity. It is a rural community, so I have learned a little bit of everything from milking cows and slaughtering chickens to water purification and crop rotation. We walk a lot, but we also eat a lot. It has been such an adventure. I jsut found out today that at the conclusion of training, I will be stationed 40 minutes north of Nairobi...such a fantastic location. I will have to learn three languages (primarily Kiswahili, but two other local tribal languages). I will be working for the Ministry of Health. Within that realm, I will be dealing with NGOs, CBOs, faith-based organizations, schools, youth groups, etc. on such topics as HIV/AIDS, malnutrition, STIs, water-borned diseases, malaria, etc. I am so blessed and so happy to be here. Many things have been frustrating, but adjustment is forthcoming. I have thought of you all everyday and cant wait to hear about what has been going on in the states. Lord knows I miss you very much. Jenn, thank you for your letter. It really brought a ray of sunshine to my day. And I will be writing back to you very soon. It is like a stampede when mail comes because people are starved for contact with home. I have not been so pressed as I know you are all very busy, but a letter is undoubtedly an unexpected and very welcomed surprise. Jess, I cannot wait to hear your account of prom (I heard you were too stunning for words!), graduation and the post-grad itinerary. Let me know what is goiing on when you get the chance. Jenn and Jess, Let me please say that I am so proud of everything you have done thus far and the beautiful, young ladies you have become. It is an honor to call you sister and a pleasure to call you friend. You will undoubtedly make mistakes in the coming months and years (as we all will), but remember what is most important and everything else will fall into place. Marty and Jess, I hope your honeymoon was fantastic. Please let me know what you did-not everything:)- but maybe some places you visited and any humorous stories. I would love to hear how married life is treating the both of you. Mommy and Papa...can you believe your daughter is representing the government?!? Who would have thought that I would have been squatting over holes in the ground, dodging cockroaches the size of small children (an exaggeration just for you!). There are bats in my room at night, which I love because they eat the mosquitoes. I have accidentally stepped on lizards and frogs when climbing out of bed in the morning. When I say that something is "close" now, it means it is within 1 hour of walking distance. I have to learn one language for the family I live with and another for the classroom. My legs are now a completely different shade than my arms and face because you can never expose your legs, at least in rural areas. I have seen more stars in the sky than I knew existed. And I am miss you so much. I would really love to hear what everyone has been up to, so please do not hesitate to write to me via letter or email. i will be in touch soon All my love, Lisa |

The girls 1,000 run this year has to be the deepest it has ever been, with nineteen girls under 3:05 and nine girls under 3:03 entering the meet. Great Bridge junior Kristine Tobin is the top seed with her 2:56.30 capping off an impressive distance triple at the Eastern Region meet two weeks ago. Freshman Andrea Oaxaca of Yorktown is the number two seed after easily putting away a very good field to win the Northern Region race a week ago in 2:57.21 and should have an advantage over some of the other runners again, in this being her only race of the meet. I am one of the nine. I think I am going to be sick. |

just a moment
So I now have a dress for the military ball. It's periwinkle and full of delight. I talked to Edison Preston McDaniels for a good three hours. We won't be able to hang out on Thursday, so I'll have to wait until the Virginia Tech Invitational to see him. I am kind of sad about it. I haven't heard from Emily, I think something is wrong. I miss her already! I asked Rocket what he wants to do when we hang out, he said make out. I even gave him the movie or dinner ideas. So much for that. Home track meet on Wednesday starting at three. You should go. Support is so helpful and exciting. PROMPROMPROM VALENTINESVALENTINESVALENTINES CRUSHONLAMONTHENRY and I have to wake up early to finish my homework. Current Mood: anxious |

and i said...
it was fun riding around with tim the other night. we were lost in norfolk for about a fourty minutes. it was our first time that we ever had reflected back on prom and the first time i ever talked to him about other guys,(well besides amir, will, and justin.) he's a really good person and a great listener. there needs to be more people like tim. haha. and so i decided to leave rocket a picture comment on his myspace the other day. and i have this thing where i call boys by their last name, and i accidentally called rocket by the wrong last name! it wasn't embarrassing because i just don't get embarrassed that easily, but i feel really bad for calling him by the wrong name. that's terrible. i called him by kwame's last name because i was talking to him on the phone... i think i'll just start being normal and call everyone by their first name. oops. my older sister took me to the mall today and told me to get anything i wanted... i left the mall empty handed. new york next week. thank goodness.
